Robin Trower

RT Robin Trower Too Rolling StonedRobin Trower was a Guitarist I listened to 25 years ago and by the look of him in this video below he’s still going strong, maybe even better because, like good wine, Guitarists get better with age ;-)

Ahem. Yea, it’s true, really, my good lady said so.

So, who is Robin Trower?

He is a Guitarist every aspiring rock/blues Guitarist should hear.

He began his professional music career in his teens and was Guitarist with Procol Harum, hooking up with Guitarist and Pianist Gary Brooker who penned the Procol Harum hit ” A Whiter Shade of Pale”.

Trower left Procol Harum in 1972 to form the Robin Trower Band. This included bass player and singer James Dewar with drummer Reg Isidore. Trower’s debut, Twice Removed From Yesterday was released in 1973, the album praised for its Hendrix-inspired mix of psychedelic rock and blues.

Trower’s second album Bridge Of Sighs followed a year later, the album reaching #7 on the Billboard magazine top 200 chart and establishing Robin Trower as a popular arena-rock headline act.

Robin has produced over 20 albums and doesn’t show signs of slowing down.

Watch the vid of ‘Too Rolling Stoned’ for Robins superb delivery and tones, “it’s like a mix of Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Led Zeppelin, lsd, and sex”,(sorry, I don’t have links for those two), according to one listener on Youtube.

Apparently, Jimi Hendrix changed Trowers approach to playing after seeing Jimi perform.

He plays the old faithful Fender Strat and seemingly strangles the daylights out of it getting tones and sounds you least expect.

And, he seems to do a lot of it with his eyes closed.

Consider this a helpful reminder that great Guitarists come in all shapes, sizes and age.

Enjoy :-)

  • In that first video, what's the effect that he has going on? It sounds like a very slow tremelo. Whatever it is, it really adds to the ambiance of the piece. Vocals were pretty chill as well.
